She finished off the year winning the doubles title at the WTA Tour Championships in Madrid, ranked #1 in doubles and a career-high #29 in singles.

2007

Stosur, together with Lisa Raymond, successfully defended her doubles titles titles in Tokyo, Indian Wells and Miami. The duo also won the German Open in Berlin. In singles, Stosur reached three quarterfinals, at Gold Coast, Tokyo and Memphis. In Rome, she defeated #1 seed Amélie Mauresmo in the second round before losing to Patty Schnyder in the following.

After the French Open, Stosur started showing symptoms of what would only after months be diagnosed as Lyme disease, an infection transmitted by the bite of ticks. By then she had slumped to a 2nd round defeat in Wimbledon and withdrawn from many tournaments on the US hardcourt circuit before losing in the 1st round of the U.S. Open, where she was the 29th seed, to then ranked no. 96 Alizé Cornet of France. Stosur did not play any more tournaments in 2007.

2008

Stosur was scheduled to make a comeback at the Gold Coast tournament. However, it was announced on her website that she would take an extended break to fully recover from her illness. Stosur stated that she was aiming to make a comeback in March, at Indian Wells. Her comeback was then further delayed, after she injured her shoulder in training. At the Beijing Olympics, Stosur was defeated in the second round of the singles tournament by no.4 seed Serena Williams. In doubles, the former world no.1 partnered Rennae Stubbs, ranked no.5 in the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Doubles Rankings at the time; however, the pair was unseeded as the ITF determined the seedings for the doubles competition based on both singles and doubles rankings standings. Playing Style

An accomplished doubles player, Stosur has developed a serve-and-volley style of play.cite web|url=http://www.asapsports.com/show_interview.php?id=35953|title=Pilot Pen Tennis - Samantha Stosur |accessdate=2008-09-30 |date=2006-08-25 ] Her right-handed forehand groundstrokes, hit with heavy spin, are considered her best, cite web|url=http://www.theage.com.au/news/tennis/stosur-so-good/2006/01/22/1137864806667.html|title=Stosur so good |accessdate=2008-09-30 |last=Pearce |first=Linda |date=2006-01-23 ] as evidenced by her often choosing to hit inside-out forehands; still, Stosur plays the ad court in doubles. Stosur's first serve, however erratic, reaches more than 112 mph (180 km/h) on regular basis; at the 2008 Hansol Korea Open final she recorded an ace at 122 mph (197 km/h), which she believes to be her fastest service to date.cite web|url=http://www.hansolopen.com/|title=Samantha Stosur interview after final|accessdate=2008-09-30 |date=2008-09-28 ] Nonetheless, it is her second, a high bouncing kick serve, that is usually highly rated by media and players alike.cite web|url=http://www.theage.com.au/news/tennis/stosurs-doubles-life-under-scrutiny/2007/01/13/1168105227421.html|title=Stosur's doubles life under scrutiny |accessdate=2008-09-30 |last=Dobbin |first=Winsor |date=2007-01-14 ] cite web|url=http://www.guidomedia.com/aws/tennisarchiveA2006.html|title=Stosur bows out to the Swiss Miss |accessdate=2008-09-30 |date=2006-01-23 ] cite web|url=http://www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,8659,21076733-23216,00.html|title=Rival fears power of Stosur serve |accessdate=2008-09-30 |last=Malone |first=Paul |date=2007-01-18 ]
