Drottningens juvelsmycke

Drottningens juvelsmycke, (English:"The Queens Jewel"), is a Classical Swedish novel by Carl Jonas Love Almquist.

It is the fourth part in the novel collection "Törnrosens bok" (The Book of the Thorn Rose), and was published in 1834. Drottningens juvelsmycke is counted as the first historical original novel of it's country., and it portrayes one of the most legendary characthers within the Swedish litteratyre; the androgynus Tintomara.

The novel takes place in 1792, and centers around the assassination of King Gustav III of Sweden. The main character, Tintomara, is present at the murder of the monarch at the masquerade ball at the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm. Tintomara is a person of unclear gender, employed at the Royal Swedish Ballet. Although the gender of Tintomara is unclear, and she is possibly an Intersexual, she is refferred to as a "she". Tintomara is described as beautiful person, often the object of passion from both males and females.

At the night of the assassination, Tintomara, as a girl, is involved in the murder. The same night, she steals the Queens jewel, only to show it to her mother.

Tintomara is then taken under the protection of a Baroness, who hides Tintomara, now as a boy, on her estate out in the country. On the country, Tintomara becomes the center of love from two women; Amanda and Adolfine, the daughters of the Baroness, and two men; the nobles Ferdinand and Clas-Henrik, who earlier courted the sisters and now hides from their involvement in the assassination.

A line from the book is famous, spoken by the mother of Tintomara, Clara: "Tintomara, two things are white- Innocence and Arsenic." It was finnished: "You have the Innocene- I have the Arsenic".
