Esther is a feminine given name. It may derive from the Persian "setareh" ("star") but otherwise, the Biblical Queen Esther is associated with the Hebrew "Hadassah" ("bride"). It is also suggested that it derives from "Ishtar", Babylonian-Assyrian goddess of love. It was adopted as an English name in the 17th Century.
