James Crotty (Prospector)

James Crotty (1845 - 1898) was an Irish born mining prospector who formed a mining company - the North Mount Lyell mining company in the western region of Tasmania just before the turn of the twentieth century.

After he died his company was amalgamated with the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company.

His estate being left to the Catholic Church enabled the completion of St Patrick's Cathedral in Melbourne, Victoria [ Rimon, Wendy (2004) Bicentenary of Tasmania website * http://www.bicentenary.tas.gov.au/print.php?id=89]
