The Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal was a commemorative medal struck to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. For Coronation and Jubilee medals, the practice up until 1977 was that United Kingdom authorities decided on a total number to be produced, then allocated a proportion to each of the Commonwealth countries, Crown dependencies and possessions. The award of the medals was then at the discretion of the local government authority, who were free to decide who got a medal and why.

The following numbers were issued:
* 30,000 British and Commonwealth medals
** 1,507 to New Zealanders
** 6,870 to Australians
* 30,000 Canadian medals

Description

* The medal is made from silver and is 32 mm in diameter. The obverse shows Queen Elizabeth II, facing right, wearing the high Imperial State Crown. The inscription around the rim reads: ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA FID DEF..
* The reverse side has a St. Edward's Crown at the top, a wreath of silver-birch foliage and catkins around the edge with the inscription THE / 25TH YEAR OF / THE REIGN OF QUEEN / ELIZABETH II / 6 FEBRUARY / 1977 in 6 lines.
**The Canadian version of the medal shows a large stylized maple leaf with CANADA around the top rim and 1952 EIIR 1977 in small lettering around the bottom of the rim. The EIIR has a small crown on top.
*The watered white ribbon (representing the silver) is 1.25 inches (30 mm) wide, with cardinal red edge stripes (1 mm each). The middle is garter blue (7 mm wide), with a cardinal stripe (1 mm wide) running through its centre.

Criteria for issue

Canada

The medal was awarded to Canadians who have made a significant contribution to their fellow citizens, their community or to Canada. It was issued in 1977.

In order that the list of those to be honoured would be representative of all the regions of Canada various organizations including all levels of government were invited to propose the names of candidates of the medal.

All members of the Order of Canada, Order of Military Merit and winners of the Canadian Bravery Decorations received the medal automatically.
