The MBTA Boat system is a public boat service providing water transport in the Greater Boston area via Boston Harbor. Both inner harbor and longer distance commuter ferries are operated. The services are actually operated by private sector companies under contract to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA).

In FY2005, the MBTA boat system carried 4,650 passengers (0.41% of total MBTA passengers) per weekday. [http://www.bostonmpo.org/bostonmpo/resources/plan/plan.htm Journey to 2030] .
