He was commissioned into the
Northumberland Hussars. In 1940, as a Lieutenant, he transferred to the Royal Artillery. In 1947, as a Captain, he transferred back to the Northumberland Hussars.
June 12 1946, he married Lady Elizabeth Diana Montagu-Douglas-Scott (daughter of Walter Montagu-Douglas-Scott, 8th Duke of Buccleuch— the Percys and the Douglases had been enemies for several centuries, this confirmed the new "entente". ( see also: Douglas Douglas-Hamilton, 14th Duke of Hamilton) and had seven children:
