M-144 was the designation assigned to two former state trunkline highways in the U.S. state of Michigan. The original version of M-144 existed as a short spur connecting the Michigan State Police headquarters in East Lansing to Michigan Avenue, which was signed at the time as M-39. The second version of M-144 began in Roscommon County and traveled between the towns of Roscommon and Luzerne in Oscoda County.cite web | author= Bessert, Christopher J. | title=Michigan Highways: Historical Overview | work=Michigan Highways | url= http://www.michiganhighways.org/master_list.html | accessdate=2008-03-02 ]

Route description

At its greatest extent, the second version of M-144 began at a junction with M-76 near Roscommon, traveled due east before turning to the northeast, passing by the community of Eldorado before terminating at a junction with M-72 near Luzerne.cite web | title=Google Maps | work=Google Maps M-144 (II) | url=http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=4417150904158815967,44.498540,-84.592500%3B10805819259246049317,44.579335,-84.362985%3B7094273542259322323,44.594205,-84.309792%3B13164249631287473509,44.615889,-84.271315&saddr=Lake+St%2FM-18+%4044.498540,+-84.592500&daddr=44.508626,-84.418602+to:CR-490+%4044.579335,+-84.362985+to:CR-490%2FOld+144+%4044.594205,+-84.309792+to:M-72%2FW+Park+Rd+%4044.615889,+-84.271315&mra=dpe&mrcr=0&mrsp=1&sz=13&via=1,2,3&sll=44.54791,-84.372425&sspn=0.09004,0.22934&ie=UTF8&ll=44.565523,-84.328995&spn=0.360051,0.917358&z=11| accessdate=2008-03-01 ]

History

The second routing of M-144 in 1940 ran between Roscommon and Luzerne. This section of highway had originally been designated M-72, but was replaced with the M-144 designation between Luzerne and Roscommon while the M-72 designation was shifted to run westerly out of Luzerne into Crawford County. Later, the eastern terminus of M-144 was shifted to end at M-72 north of Eldorado while the western terminus shifted into downtown Roscommon. After the completion of the I-75 freeway west of Roscommon, the routing of M-18 had become obsolete. It was then realigned on top of the M-144 routing, thereby removing M-144 from the state trunkline system and the number has not been used since.
