Gary Plumley

Gary Plumley

Gary Plumley (born 24 March, 1956 in Birmingham) is an English former professional footballer. A goalkeeper, he played for Newport County, Cardiff City and Ebbw Vale F.C..

Plumley is most notable for a one-off performance in the 1987 FA Cup Semi-final between Watford and Tottenham Hotspur.

Watford goalkeeper Tony Coton suffered a broken finger two weeks before the game so manager Graham Taylor needed to find cover for goalkeeper Steve Sherwood outside of the transfer window.

In desperation, Taylor went to see Watford chief executive Eddie Plumley and asked to sign his son Gary, 31, who had just retired from football and was working in his wine bar Roman's in Caerleon, Newport. Sherwood was subsequently injured so Plumley was thrust straight into the team. Tottenham won the match 4-1.

Plumley currently runs his own estate agency business in Newport.
