Jocelyn (opera)

Jocelyn Op. 109 is a four-act opera by Benjamin Godard, and set to a French libretto by Paul Armand Silvestre and the famous tenor Victor Capoul. It was based on a poem by Alphonse de Lamartine. It received its première on February 25, 1888 at Le Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, Belgium with Capoul creating the title role. Capoul's last performance on stage was also in this role, when he performed it later 1888 in Paris. This opera remains Godard's most enduring composition, especially for the tender berceuse (lullaby) for tenor, "Oh! ne t'éveille pas encor." This aria has been recorded by many tenors, including Capoul, Edmond Clément, Jussi Björling and Plácido Domingo, and in arrangement by Pablo Casals.
