Fort Ritchie

Fort Ritchie

Fort Ritchie was situated in the mountains near the Pennsylvania border in northern Washington County, Maryland. The base was closed during the Clinton administration as part of a downsizing of US forces. The Base Commander, Col. Butz, ran the slogan, "Out the Gate, by 98" which for the most part did close around that time.

History

The base was first called Camp Ritchie, when it was started prior to World War II as a troop training ground. It had 2 man made lakes at the center held by a Dam built by the Army Corps of Engineers overlooking the lake was it's signature building the "Castle". Several features of the base were built with the same "European Fortress" look, including several base entrances and a few other buildings.
