List of hospitals in OhioThe MetroHealth System is a non-profit, county operated, health care system located in Cleveland, Ohio. MetroHealth is an academic health care system committed to Northeast Ohio's communities by saving lives, restoring health, promoting wellness, and providing outstanding, lifelong care accessible to all.
Founded in 1837 as City Hospital,[1] The MetroHealth system is the safety net hospital for the residents of the city of Cleveland and Cuyahoga County. It is one of the three major health care systems in Cleveland, Ohio.
In 1972, MetroHealth, referred to as Cleveland Metro General Hospital, built a new medical center on its Scranton Avenue location. The current building is 2 circular towers connected with a central core, which was renovated in 1995. In 1982, MetroHealth established its Metro Life Flight air ambulance service. Metro Life Flight has done almost 50,000 air medical missions without any incidents. This air ambulance service is internationally known has trained crews from Poland to Japan. They use the EC-145 for their air ambulance service, a Lear Jet has also been modified for transferring patients from world destinations.
In 1985, Dr. Richard Fratianne, established Metro's burn unit to help burn victims recover from their trauma. MetroHealth is the only Level I adult trauma center for Northeast Ohio. Many burn and trauma victims are transferred to MetroHealth for this kind of treatment.
In the 1990s, Metrohealth expanded its Scranton Main Campus with new Medical offices, parking areas, and renovated its tower complex.
