Pauline Fossil is a fictional character in the book "Ballet Shoes" by Noel Streatfield, and its two television adaptations. She has no parents, she was adopted by Professor Matthew Brown, called "Gum". She is portrayed by Elizabeth Morgan (in 1975 adaption) and by Emma Watson (in 2007 adaptation). She was created by Noel Streatfeild in 1936.

Pauline's story

When she was just a baby, she was adopted by Professor Matthew Brown. He found her during his travel, in a shipwreck. He took her home and adopted her in the name of his great-niece Sylvia Brown.

Pauline lives in London, England. When she was six, she started going to school, but she had to leave it because her guardian could no longer pay the school fees. When she was 10, she became a student of Children's Academy of Dancing and Stage Training, with her sisters Petrova and Posy. She showed some talent for dance, but not as much as her talent for acting. She soon became the best actress in her group. Her first role was Tyltyl in the Maurice Maeterlinck's theatre play "The Blue Bird". When she was 12, she got her permission to work, and got her first professional role, Alice in the theatre play "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." With that show, she became a child star in England. After that, she became successful theatre actress, acting Peaseblossom in A Midsummer Night's Dream and King Edward IV in "Richard III".

Hollywood showed some interest in Pauline, so she got the role of Henrietta Anne of England in the hit movie about King Charles II. After that film, Pauline returned to the theatre for the last time, playing the Fairy Godmother in "Cinderella". After "Cinderella", Pauline signed the contract for acting in Hollywood films.
