"Federation" is a 2003 "Star Trek" novel that ties the crew of the original "Enterprise" (NCC-1701) with the crew of the "Enterprise D" (NCC-1701D). The crews meet in the event horizon of a black hole while both of them are on very similar missions. The crew the original "Enterprise" is transporting Zephram Cochrane while the "Enterprise D" crew is transporting an life-form that needs Cochrane to sustain its life.
