"Come Into My World" is a song by Australian recording artist and songwriter Kylie Minogue, which was released on her eighth studio album Fever (2001). It was released as the fourth and final single off the album. "Come Into My World" was written by Rob Davis and Cathy Dennis, who also written Minogue's successful single "Can't Get You Out Of My Head". It was later produced by the writers as well. "Come Into My World" is a dance-pop song, which interludes pop and house styles, with a small disco style. Lyrically, the song talks about a man Minogue likes that she would like him to come into her world. "Come Into My World" received generally positive reviews from music critics, with many liking and enjoying the lyrical content.

The song had some success throughout the world. The song had peaked at number four in her native Australia and number eight in the United Kingdom. The song also managed to chart on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, where it peaked at number ninety-one. The accompanying video was shot for the single, featuring duplicated Kylie's walking in Paris, France with a lot of local townspeople. It also received generally favorable remarks for the video, praising the idea. The song was later honoured with a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording in 2004, becoming Minogue's debut first Grammy Award to date.

Background and composition

With the success of the previous single "Love At First Sight" in the U.S., Minogue announced she would released a fourth and final single, which "Come Into My World" was chosen as it. The song was written by Rob Davis and Cathy Dennis, as well as produced by them. But at the time of the release, Minogue released the Australian promotional track "Fever" from the album with the same name.^[1] So the single was later released after it on November 2, 2002. But there were two versions recorded for the single. There was an album version of the single and there was a single version, which was not released digitally. However, the single version was released on Minogue's 2004 compilation album Ultimate Kylie (2004). "Come Into My World" is a dance-pop song, which interludes some house music and nu-disco styles which lasts for four minutes and thirty-two seconds.^[2]

Critical reception

"Come Into My World" received generally positive reviews from music critics. Chris True had highlighted the song as a album highlight for Fever.^[3] NME had said "In fact, it's so good that it crops up twice on 'Fever', the second time masquerading as another number called 'Come Into My World'."^[4] Pitchfork Media gave it a good review saying ""Come Into My World" is a more traditionally disco-oriented track, reminiscent of Eumir Deodato's fantasy soundscapes, and with the alluring refrain, "Come, come, come into my world."^[5] PopMatters had game it a positive review. They initially said "“Come Into My World” is also a plea for love, even if Minogue begs the listener to “Come . . . come . . . come into my world” and instructs to “[take] these hands that were made to touch and feel you”."^[6]

Chart performance

The song had debuted and peaked at number eight on the UK Singles Chart, becoming a consecutive top-ten for Minogue, but didn't last long in the charts. The song debuted and peaked at number four on the Australian Singles Chart, staying in the charts for nine weeks. The song was certificated gold by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA). In New Zealand, the song debuted at number thirty-four on the charts, then rose to number twenty, peaking there and stayed on the charts for eleven weeks.

In the US, the song peaked at number ninety-one Hot 100, becoming a low-score on the charts, but managed to peaked at number twenty on the Hot Dance Club Songs. The song also got lower charts in Europe, peaking at number seventy-eight in France, number sixty-six in Chile, fifteen in Denmark and thirteen in Italy.

Music video

Background

The video was directed by French director Michel Gondry and updated a concept that he had used in Neneh Cherry's "Feel It" music video. The video also bears similarities to a past video, "Did It Again", where there were four Minogues. The video was shot on 8 September 2002 at the intersection of Rue du Point du Jour and Rue de Solférino, in Boulogne-Billancourt, Paris. Fifty extras were on hand, including Russian actor Sacha Bourdo. It took over fifteen takes to create the desired effect. Fifteen days were required for the video's special effects. The video was released in Paris on 21 October 2002.

The accompanying video features Kylie strolling around a city block within the Boulogne-Billancourt suburb of Paris, France. Each time she completes a circuit of the area, a new Kylie emerges from one of the stores (which is in fact the 'old' Minogue, that did the circuit the first time around), and each of the people in the background are also duplicated in slightly different positions. By the time the video concludes there are four unperturbed Minogues amidst an extremely chaotic scene with each background extra also depicted four times. The video ends as a fifth Minogue emerges.

Reception

Slant Magazine placed the video for "Come Into My World" at #1 on their "Best of the Aughts: Music Videos" list.^[7] The reviewer compared the video to Zbigniew Rybczyński's short animated film, Tango.^[7] Pitchfork Media placed it at #14 on their list "The Top 50 Music Videos of the 2000s".^[8] Scott Plagenhoef said of the video: "Arguably the most re-watchable video of the decade, Michel Gondry pulls out the "Star Guitar" multiplication trick and applies it to Kylie and the streets of Paris."^[8] Complex placed it at #79 on their list "Top 100 Music Videos of the 2000s".^[9]

Notes

The song was used in a season 5 episode of Charmed named "House Calls" The single version of the song briefly plays after the opening credits end. The song has been performed four times during Minogue's concert tours, it was the opening scene to her KylieFever2002 tour, during both Showgirl concert tours the song was performed as a ballad. On her KylieX2008 tour Minogue performed the song's Fischerspooner Remix. During the For You, For Me Tour, her first North American Tour, was performed a new remix version made by Steve Anderson.
Vic Chesnutt covered the song for the soundtrack of Mitte Ende August, after a friend told him the main theme resembled Kylie's song very much.

Featured in the London production of the stage musical, Priscilla Queen of the Desert – the Musical, replacing the song "Go West (Reprise)" from the Australian production.
