"Asterix and the Great Rescue" was released by Sega for Mega Drive (Genesis in North America) in 1993 and for Game Gear and Master System in 1994.

Story

This game is based on the long-running, French comic book series "Asterix the Gaul". The characters Asterix and Obelix must rescue Getafix (Panoramix) and Dogmatix (Idéfix) from the Romans, who are in the process of taking over Gaul.

Gameplay

It is a side-scrolling platform game, with various levels typical of the genre, including underwater. The startup screen offers a choice of difficulty level, as well as the ability to turn off the music and/or sound effects.

Controls

A peculiar aspect of this game is the ability, or, rather, necessity of toggling between the two characters, Asterix and Obelix. This is accomplished by pressing up on the directional pad, and by pressing the 1 button. Sometimes it is necessary to be Obelix, in order to move items or jump high enough. Other times, Asterix is required, so he can crawl under something or run fast. Other than toggling the weapons, the other controls are as expected on any platformer.
