Francesc Layret i Foix (Barcelona, 10 July 1880 - Barcelona, 30 November 1920) politician Catalan and lawyer of ideology national and republican.

Biography

Francesc Layret was born in Barcelona on 10 July 1880. At both years he acquired a child paralysis that left him crippled for all the life. It was a brilliant student in the high school leaving certificate as well as in the two university careers that he processed at the same time, that of Laws and that of Philosophy and Letters, of which he|she obtained a doctorate in 1905, with the maximum qualification.

In 1902 he was part of the group founding of the Popular Encyclopedic Cultural Association, I presided over the first Organizing Commission and he|she|it wrote up the first Statutes. Later he|she|it participated in it actively and he|she|it presided over it during period 1906-1907. As a lawyer the union majority and that grouped the most combative workers participated in numerous processes of social character defending the workers, especially of the CNT.

Layret was elected town councilor of the Town Council of Barcelona by the Republican Union, and operated copies|specimens with austerity and honesty. He was appointed president of the Commission of Treasury that it|he|she elaborated and he|she|it executed the Budget of the Reform, opening the one that today is the Via Laietana street. Of this budget he achieved a saving of two million with which in 1908 it|he|she elaborated and defended the Budget of Culture for the creation of some schools of modern, lay and mixed education. Budget of which the Town Council approved in spite of the opposition of the rights, but that finally he could not put on in practice to the being vetoed by the Regional Government.

In 1919 deputy was elected by Sabadell in Las Cortes of Madrid, in representation of the Catalan Republican Party. Of his interventions, he highlights the one that, as a defender of the peace, carried out root of the presentation of the Budget of War and a speech, which he pronounced in year 1920, in which the repressive situation denounced that the Catalan proletariat after the strike of the manufacturer Canadenca suffered, in 1919.

Gunmen

On 30 November 1920 Francesc Layret was murdered for the gunmen of the Free Union (as sarcastically he self denominated himself on salary of the Catalan employers and with the complicity of the governmental authority. Some murdered it|him when he went out of home of his to go, as a deputy, in the Civil Government to protest for the transfer from thirty prisoners, anarchy-syndicalist and of the Catalan Republican Party other, among those who found his friends Lluis Companys Lluís Companys and Salvador Seguí.

A character relieving Catalan of the political-social life was, Francesc Layret, freethinker, democrat, republican, Catalan nationalist and defender of the social justice. The commitment with the reality of his time and of Catalonia he led him to collaborating with the working-class movement and the libertarian movement, that they made Barcelona be internationally known like the "rose of fire" for his role of avant-guard in the fight against the oppression and the exploitation. For Francesc Layret the fight for the democracy and the Republic, the fight for the rights of the Catalan nation and the fight for a society in which the social injustice had been exiled.

He founded the actual Partit Republicà Català.
