Williamstown is a city in Wood County, West Virginia, United States, along the Ohio River. It is part of the Parkersburg-Marietta-Vienna, WV-OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 2,996 at the 2000 census. The Fenton Art Glass Company is located in the city.

Geography

Williamstown is located at coor dms|39|23|58|N|81|27|2|W|city (39.399574, -81.450558)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.8 square miles (4.6 km²), of which, 1.3 square miles (3.5 km²) of it is land and 0.4 square miles (1.1 km²) of it (23.86%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 2,996 people, 1,251 households, and 876 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,233.5 people per square mile (863.3/km²). There were 1,330 housing units at an average density of 991.5/sq mi (383.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.26% White, 0.20% African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.03% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.67% of the population.

There were 1,251 households out of which 31.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.5% were married couples living together, 9.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.9% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.90.

In the city the population was spread out with 23.8% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 89.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $36,344, and the median income for a family was $44,189. Males had a median income of $35,806 versus $24,485 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,652. About 7.0% of families and 8.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.6% of those under age 18 and 2.3% of those age 65 or over.

Fenton Glass

Founded in 1905 by brothers Frank L. and John W. Fenton, the Fenton Art Glass Company ranks among the world's foremost producers of handmade art glass. Fenton is the largest manufacturer of hand made glass in the US. Fenton makes no 2 pieces of glass the same. The firm is now led by third- and fourth-generation Fenton family members, who work side by side with over 400 employees, including skilled glassworkers and decorators, to create beautiful, handmade art glass in Williamstown, West Virginia.

The Fenton Art Glass Company announced August 9, 2007, that it would cease its operations over the next fewmonths. The Fenton Gift Shop will remain open, and its management will be exploring ways to continue to offer visitors andtourists the glassmaking experience.
