The Lantern

The Lantern

"The Lantern" is the name of the student-published university newspaper at The Ohio State University. It is one of the largest campus newspapers in the United States.

The paper was chartered in 1881 and became an integral part of the School of Journalism in 1914. Today, with a circulation of 28,000 papers during the regular school year and readership of 75,000, it is the third largest college newspaper in the country. The Lantern is a laboratory paper that is put together daily by students in the newsroom of the Journalism Building. There are 15 paid editors who change after completion of academic quarters. The business side of the newspaper is operated by 15 full time employees and 5-7 student Account Executives responsible for advertising sales. The print and online advertising allows for the paper to be fully self-funded and does not rely on the University for financial aid. Revenues are not disclosed but are estimated to vary from $1.8M to $2.5M annually.

The Lantern is now facing several serious problems.

It is projected to lose more than $150,000 in 2008, according to School of Communication officials. In efforts to prevent further losses, the school decided to suspend the summer printing of The Lantern. The Lantern is currently only available online, losing several vital advertisers.

The student newspaper was also forced to cut circulation down to about 15,000.

In the past 5 years, The Lantern has gone through 7 different advisers.
