Korolyov cross

Korolyov cross

The Korolyov cross is a visual effect observed in the smoke plumes of the R-7 Semyorka rocket and its derivatives, during separation of the four liquid-fuelled booster rockets attached to the core stage. [NASA TV coverage of Soyuz TMA-12 launch] The effect is named after Sergey Korolyov, who designed the R-7. The effect is caused by the four booster rockets pitching over symmetrically due to aerodynamic forces acting on them as they fall away from the core of the rocket. When the rocket is launched into clear skies, the effect can be seen from the ground at the launch site.
