19th century

* 1880 – The first Southern Pacific Railroad train reaches Tucson, Arizona.
* 1880 – The Miami Valley Railway, in Ohio, is sold from receivership to the Toledo, Delphos and Burlington railway.
* 1896 – The Grand Trunk Railway purchases the Central Vermont Railway and begins operating it as a wholly owned subsidiary.

20th century

* 1904 – The Southern Pacific Railroad completes the Coast Line between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, California.
* 1949 – The Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad and Western Pacific Railroad jointly launch the "California Zephyr" between Chicago, Illinois, and San Francisco, California, as the first train to include Vista Dome cars in regular service.
* 1960 – The "Pioneer Zephyr" trainset makes its final revenue run on a trip from Lincoln, Nebraska, to Kansas City, Missouri. It then continues through Galesburg, Illinois to Chicago, Illinois in preparation for its final disposition.
