Abandon chip!

Abandon chip!

Abandon Chip! is the only active fanzine for supporters of Northern Counties East League Division One side Scarborough Athletic FC.

It is unusual for a club at step 10 of the football pyramid to have a fanzine, as the 'golden age' of the fanzine is said to have been the late 1980s and early 1990s. Many fanzines in the higher levels of the pyramid have now become fully fledged magazines.

History

Scarborough FC had been without a fanzine for almost four years, following the demise of previous fanzine '2's Company, 500's a Crowd', when the first issue of Abandon Chip! went into production in March 2006.

After a month in the making, the debut issue was released in April 2006 [ [http://www.scarboroughfc.com/news/index.php?news=2097 Scarborough Football Club ] ] , for the now defunct Scarborough FC's final home game of their 2005–06 Conference National campaign.

The next four issues were released in Scarborough FC's Conference North campaign of 2006–07 - a season which proved to be Scarborough's last as a football club, as they folded in June 2007.

Issues 6 onwards represent the reformed club, and it was decided to keep the same name, despite the pun being based on the perilious situation Scarborough FC found themselves in, and also the stadium's sponsors at the time - McCain.

Issue numbers were also continued from where they left off in Scarborough FC's final season.

The fanzine is currently up to Issue 10, with Issue 11 due out in October 2008.

'Away The Lads' Award

The fanzine gives marks out of 100 for each away trip throughout the season. The scores were devised from awarding marks out of 10 for ten differing categories, for example the weather and the performance of Scarborough Athletic, to name just two. The format has changed slightly from Issue 11 onwards, with the overall experience being given a mark out of 100 as opposed to categorizing the marks.
AFC Emley were the first team whose name appeared on the trophy, winning the 2007–08 award by scoring 80 points.

Editors

The fanzine has had two editors in total. Matt Lawson, who founded the fanzine, is still the editor. James Hunter was drafted in as a co-editor during the 2006–07 season. He left the post in April 2007 due to future commitments as programme editor for Scarborough Athletic in their debut season.
