General Ashraf Rashid (Urdu: أشرف رشيد) (May 23 1948 –October 2 2004 ) was aPakistan i general and the former head of theSpecial Service Group division within thePakistan Army from October 1995 to September 1999. He was responsible for conducting paramilitary operations and infiltratingKashmiri militants on theIndia n side of theLine of Control , which subsequently led to theKargil War . He resigned from his post in September 1999 following Pakistan's defeat for which he was widely blamed.Military career
General Rashid entered the
Pakistan Military Academy in 1966. He graduated two years later and joined thePakistan Army at the rank oflieutenant . He served in theIndo-Pakistani War of 1971 (during which he was premanently injured on the right cheek) and, later, in theKargil War , the failure of which he was widely blamed for.Rashid graduated from theCommand and General Staff College inFort Leavenworth ,Kansas .Before becoming Commander of the
Special Service Group commando division, Rashid was Director General of Military Operations, succeedingJehangir Karamat , who became Chief of Army Staff.Kargil War and resignationAs head of the
Special Service Group , the special operations division, Rashid helpedKashmiri militants infiltrate the Indian side of theLine of Control in theKargil district ofKashmir , where his division conducted covert operations. Only Rashid, then-Army Chief of StaffPervez Musharraf and two other generals knew about the operation.The event marked the beginning of theKargil War , which ended with Pakistan's defeat and India regaining possession of Kargil. Rashid's role in initiating the conflict and increased political pressure led to his resignation in September 1999.Death
