Loutros, Evros

Loutros or Loutro (Greek: Λουτρός), also with the first o accented is a village in the southern part of the Evros Prefecture in Greece, it is also in the municipality of Traianoupoli and is located between Alexandroupoli and the GR-51. Loutros is linked with the GR-2 old road (Florina - Thessaloniki - Kavala - Alexandroupoli) and the Egnatia Odos (E90) with its only interchange. Its 2001 population was 1,049 for the settlement and 1,120 for the municipal district. The area are flat with the exception to the north, the Aegean Sea along with the Thracian Gulf is situated 5 km to the south.

Loutros is located south of Soufli, west of the Turkish border and Keşan and east of Alexandroupoli, Kavala and Thessaloniki.

History

After World War II and the Greek Civil War, many of its buildings were rebuilt. Electricity and automobiles arrived in the 1960s, it was linked with pavement in the late-20th century, television arrived in the 1980s. Internet and computers arrived in the late-1990s. The village lost three fourths of its population between 1981 and 1991 and two thirds between 1991 and 2001 totaling to nearly half between 1981 and 2001, as its inhabitants left for the larger cities and outside Greece.

Loutros has a school, a church and a square ("plateia"). Its nearest gymnasium (middle school) is in Antheia and the nearest lyceum (secondary school) is in Alexandroupoli.
