Brake shoe

Brake shoe

In mechanical engineering, a brake shoe (or a shoe or a brake block) is the part of the brake that holds the brake pad as it moves against the inside lining of the brake drum, the running face of a train wheel or the plate (disc) of a disc brake to stop or slow down its rotation. This type of shoe is commonly referred to as the brake block. It can also be the plate between moving parts (and / or stationary parts) to allow friction as a means of adjustment. It can also be the one of the rectangular open boxes which are mounted on the brake calipers of bicycle and that hold the brake pads which rub on the rim of a bicycle wheel to slow the bicycle down or stop it. A type of brake shoes are used on track brakes.
