Woodville is a town in Tyler County, Texas, United States. The town is intersected by three U.S. highways: U.S. Highway 69, U.S. Highway 190, and U.S. Highway 287. The population was 2,415 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Tyler CountyGR|6. The town was named after George Tyler Wood.

Geography

Woodville is located at coor dms|30|46|34|N|94|25|16|W|city (30.776246, -94.421243)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3.2 square miles (8.2 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 2,415 people, 990 households, and 591 families residing in the town. The population density was 766.2 people per square mile (296.0/km²). There were 1,264 housing units at an average density of 401.0/sq mi (154.9/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 65.34% White, 31.80% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.75% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 0.87% from other races, and 0.91% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.45% of the population.

There were 990 households out of which 26.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.3% were married couples living together, 16.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.3% were non-families. 37.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 20.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.25 and the average family size was 3.01.

In the town the population was spread out with 24.6% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 21.3% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 24.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 77.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 73.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $23,711, and the median income for a family was $31,000. Males had a median income of $30,515 versus $21,125 for females. The per capita income for the town was $14,686. About 19.7% of families and 23.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 38.1% of those under age 18 and 13.2% of those age 65 or over.

Region

The area consists of the Tyler County Airport, Tyler County Hospital, a regional school divided into an elementary school, intermediate school, middle school, and a high school, three nursing homes, county jail, and various markets. Attractions include the museums [http://www.heritage-village.org/ "Heritage Village"] and [http://www.allanshiverslibrary.com/ "Allan Shivers Library and Museum"] . The Heritage Village museum is an open air display of original, old buildings including a church, school, and a log cabin in set with others to help create a replica of an old frontier town. "Allan Shivers Library and Museum" is named for former Texas governor and housed within a restored Victorian home. Big Thicket National Preserve is to the south and west of town.

Education

Woodville is served by the Woodville Independent School District.
