A bursa (plural "bursae" or "bursas";
Latin: "Bursa synovialis") is a small fluid-filled sac made of white fibrous tissue and lined with synovial membrane. It provides a cushion between bones and tendons and/or muscles around a joint; bursae are filled with synovial fluidand are found around almost every major joint of the body; when they become inflamed, the condition is called bursitis.
"Bursa" is Latin for purse, which is what a bursa resembles.
Infection or irritation of a bursa leads to
bursitis(inflammation of a bursa). The general term for disease of bursae is "bursopathy". Current medical studies have no specific knowledge of the entire bursae system.
