Paul Carberry is an Irish National Hunt jockey. He was born on the 9th of February, 1974. He hails from a very famous racing family. He is the son of legendary jockey Tommy Carberry and his brother Philip and sister Nina are both recognised as world class jockeys too. His uncle is Arthur Moore, one of Ireland's leading National Hunt trainers. Paul is stable jockey to Noel Meade, the current champion trainer on the Emerald Isle.

Carberry learned his trade through hunting, show-jumping and point-to-pointing in Ireland and many view him as one of Ireland's leading jump jockeys along with Ruby Walsh, Barry Geraghty, Davy Russell and Andrew McNamara. He has many big race successes to his name on both sides of the Irish Sea; the biggest of which was probably when he followed in his father's footsteps and won the Grand National aboard Bobbyjo in 1999.

Carberry is to racing as to what David Beckham is to soccer. He recently launched his own brand of racewear selling all sorts of racing equipment.

He is definitely a man for the big occasion, having won nearly all of the big races throughout the National Hunt season in Ireland. Yet, like most great sportspeople, he has his problems outside of the game. In 2005, he was arrested and charged over an alleged incident which took place on board an Aer Lingus flight from Malaga to Dublin. He was sentenced to two months in jail over the incident but having served his time, he returned as hungry as ever. And he appears to be back to his mercurial best now.

Carberry is more of a stylish jockey and would not be known for his strength. He is one of the most natural horsemen in the world and his uncanny sit in the saddle makes him easily identifiable to racegoers and commentators alike. He is also very relaxed and refuses to panic when the going gets tough. He likes to settle his horses out the back or "hold them up" and produce them late. It is very easy on the eye to watch but from time to time, Carberry misjudges the pace and gets it wrong. This was seen to great effect at the 2008 Cheltenham Festival, when he rode the perfect race on Crack Away Jack. The horse cruised alongside the eventual runner-up and won with minimual effort from Carberry. Three days later, he tried the same tactics on a horse called Psycho but although the horse was clearly the best in the race, Carberry left it with too much to do and had to settle for second best.

Paul has been assiocated with many great horses throughout his illustrious career. These include Sausilito Bay, Nicanor, Florida Pearl, Beef or Salmon, Solerina, Harbour Pilot, Harchibald, Hairy Molly and of course Bobbyjo.
