A Brief History

The story of Sacred Heart College began on the 16th October, 1887, when the foundation stone of the two original classrooms was laid. These classrooms are the wooden and freestone classrooms on Cross Street, now known as The Saye Building. The school accepted its first pupils in 1888, when it was blessed and opened. Between 1888 and 1908, Sacred Heart School was conducted by dedicated Catholic lay teachers, among whom was Miss Ethel Saye, who later became well-known to generations of pupils as Sr. M Josephine, the Infant Mistress. By 1906, it was becoming increasingly difficult to maintain the salaried lay staff because of the final withdrawal of government assistance, from all but secular schools, by the Education Act of 1885. In 1908 the Sisters of St Joseph came to New Town to take charge of the Sacred Heart Parish School. Sr. M Gabriel Reidy was the first religious Principal.

The number of pupils attending the school grew steadily with the expansion of the City of Hobart into the Northern suburbs. Two more classrooms were constructed and were completed in 1917. These are the two primary classrooms of classical design situated off the south-eastern corner of the Church. The first half of the twenties saw continued growth with the erection of two new classrooms in 1921 and 1924.

In 1938 a training centre, or Novitiate for student Sisters was purchased. The building, then known as "Restormel" is now the Quinlan Building, and the property on which it stood is now occupied by the Secondary School.

By the 1950s, the facilities at Sacred Heart were inadequate to cope with the increased enrolments. In 1959 students moved into a new block of ten classrooms in Pedder Street. Two Science laboratories were built in 1960 with the aid of a grant from the Commonwealth Government.

In 1971 the then Finance Advisory Board was constituted as a Board of Management. In 1987, the constitution was revised and in 1989 the College was incorporated to comply with Commonwealth Government directives. The College is now administered by a Board of Directors of the Sisters of St Joseph advised by the College Advisory Board.

The 1970's saw unparalleled development with additional classrooms in both the primary and secondary sections, libraries, science laboratories and student and staff amenities. Sports fields were developed in Giblin Street.

The period of the nineties has seen two major changes occurring at Sacred Heart. The decision was taken to have a dual stream Primary School and to commence a Kindergarten in 1995. The restructuring of Catholic Education in Southern Tasmania saw the introduction of co-education into the Secondary School in 1994. Students from Sacred Heart complete their education at Grade 10 and then have the opportunity to graduate from Guilford Young College.

To coincide with the introduction of a dual stream primary and secondary co-education, facilities were upgraded to provide additional primary classrooms, Science, Materials Design and Technology, Home Economics, Computing facilities and student amenities.

In 1996 at the request of the Tasmanian Catholic Education commission, a unit for secondary students with special needs was initiated and an After School Care Programme commenced.

The SSJ Performance Centre, a major development to provide liturgical, cultural and sporting facilities for the community was launched with Commonwealth assistance in 1999.

In 2001, the Sisters of St. Joseph appointed the first lay Principal to the College.

The original 'novitiate' now known as Quinlan was re-developed as a comfortable and functional staff facility and a modern textiles room was constructed in 2002. Following this development, the primary administration building was re-furbished in 2003.

In 2002 the College purchased the section of Cross Street between Pedder and Clare Streets. Re-development of this area commenced in 2003, and in 2004 a paved courtyard and amphitheatre was constructed between the Church and the Quinlan building.

In 2003 approval was granted to develop an 'off-site' city campus for Grade 9 students. Refinement of the concept over 2004/05 will result in the establishment of a facility designed to respond to the learning and social needs of this group of students in 2005.

From January, 2005, the Sisters of St Joseph's governance role has included Immaculate Heart of Mary School, which will become an additional single-stream primary campus of the College. The leadership and management of the Immaculate Heart site will be the responsibility of the Principal of Sacred Heart College, thus combining the two primary sites as one school.

Over 1m AUS was then spent in the next three years to rebuild the Leanh Valley campus to bring it with the standards of the college.

In 2008 work started on rebuilding some of the High school and will be ready in 2009

In 2008, the College will have a total enrolment of 1142 students and will employ a staff of approximately 100.
