Highlands is a census-designated place (CDP) in Harris County, Texas, United States. The population was 7,089 at the 2000 census. The original name of the area was Elena Station.

Geography

Highlands is located at coor dms|29|49|0|N|95|3|34|W|city (29.816803, -95.059362)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 6.6 square miles (17.0 km²), of which, 6.2 square miles (16.0 km²) of it is land and 0.4 square miles (1.0 km²) of it (6.09%) is water. Highlands is located on the banks of the San Jacinto River and the Houston Ship Channel. The majority of the land in Highlands is on a high river bank. The historic Lynchburg Ferry is nearby but the actual site is located in an unincorporated part of Harris County.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 7,089 people, 2,564 households, and 1,976 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,148.1 people per square mile (443.6/km²). There were 2,812 housing units at an average density of 455.4/sq mi (176.0/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 90.18% White, 1.61% African American, 0.51% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 5.28% from other races, and 2.00% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 13.01% of the population.

There were 2,564 households out of which 37.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.7% were married couples living together, 11.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.9% were non-families. 19.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.75 and the average family size was 3.14.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 27.8% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 29.4% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 10.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 100.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.5 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $41,288, and the median income for a family was $49,655. Males had a median income of $41,926 versus $25,226 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $18,556. About 6.7% of families and 9.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.0% of those under age 18 and 6.3% of those age 65 or over.

Schools include Highlands Junior High School, Highlands Elementary School, and B.P. Hopper.
