Tim McIlrath and bassistJoe Principe , Rise Against signed toFat Wreck Chords (a label formed byFat Mike ofNOFX fame) in 2000 and released two albums, "The Unraveling " (2001) and "Revolutions Per Minute" (2003), for the label. In early 2004, the band switched toDreamworks Records and recorded their third album, "Siren Song of the Counter Culture ". However, Dreamworks was absorbed by theUniversal Music Group and Rise Against finally found themselves onGeffen Records , who released the album. The singles off "Siren Song of the Counter Culture" — "Give It All ", "Swing Life Away " and "Life Less Frightening " — helped Rise Against gain a large mainstream succes.In July 2006, Rise Against released "
The Sufferer & the Witness ". The critically-acclaimed album, also the band's most successful, debuted at number 10 on the Billboard 200, and has since gone Platinum in Canada. The album prdocued five singles — "Ready to Fall ", "Prayer of the Refugee ", "The Good Left Undone ", "Behind Closed Doors", and the radio-only "The Approaching Curve " — and has sold over 500,000 copies in the US, proving to be Rise Against's most successful album to date.
