Ferial Haffajee

Ferial Haffajee is the editor of the Mail & Guardian newspaper and was the first black woman editor of a major newspaper in South Africa.

Early career

Haffajee was a cub reporter at the Mail & Guardian and has acted as its associate editor, media editor and economics writer at various times. Before taking up the editorship she held jobs at state broadcaster the SABC, as a radio producer and television reporter [cite web|url=http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/specials/1318_africa_radio_aw/page12.shtml|title=The Africa Radio Awards|publisher=BBC|accessdate=5 July|accessyear=2008] , and at the Financial Mail magazine, where she was a senior editor responsible for political coverage and the managing editor. Mail & Guardian editorship

Haffajee was appointed editor of the Mail & Guardian in February 2004 [cite web|url=http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?click_id=139&art_id=qw1074165121483B253&set_id=1|title=New editor for the Mail and Guardian|publisher=Independent Online|accessdate=5 July|accessyear=2008] , two years after control of the paper was acquired by Zimbabwean publisher Trevor Ncube. In 2006 the paper was again interdicted, and Haffajee threatened, after republishing controversial cartoons depicting the prophet Muhammad.
