Los Angeles Harbor College

Los Angeles Harbor College (LAHC) is one of two community colleges serving the South Bay region of Los Angeles. LAHC serves mainly students from Harbor City, Carson, San Pedro, Gardena, Lomita, Wilmington and the Palos Verdes Peninsula.

LAHC accommodates over 8,000 students per semester, and is located between Wilmington and Harbor City, the heart of the Los Angeles harbor region.

As of 2004, 73% of LAHC's population were part-time students, with 27% describing themselves as full-time. The school population is 37% male and 63% female.

For 60 years, Los Angeles Harbor College has been the college of choice for Harbor-area residents seeking educational excellence with a personal touch. From its beginning in September of 1949 when the first students passed through the doors, Harbor College has grown from a technically oriented college into a comprehensive institution of higher learning with a broad spectrum of transfer, vocational, and community services programs.

Today, the nearly 8,000 students that enroll each semester in credit courses reflect the diverse ethnic composition of the communities served by the college. One of nine two-year public community colleges comprising the Los Angeles Community College District, Harbor College prides itself on being the college of choice for the nearly 400,000 residents of Carson, Harbor City, Gardena, Lomita, San Pedro, Wilmington, and the Palos Verdes Peninsula.

Harbor College also takes pride in being a leader among community colleges in educational applications of modern technology. True to its tradition, Harbor College is energetically working to implement techniques and programs to prepare its students for the rapidly changing workplace. An important part of that effort is Harbor College's firm commitment to creating and building partnerships with local business, community, and civic organizations to maximize the quality and scope of its educational programs.

Programs

LAHC offers, like most community colleges in the state of California, programs for students to eventually transfer to a four-year university as well as occupational training programs in business and office administration, electronics technology, computer technology, and nursing.
