Geography

New Underwood is located at 44°5′38″N 102°50′3″W / 44.09389°N 102.83417°W / 44.09389; -102.83417 (44.093843, -102.834055).^[3]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.5 square miles (1.3 km²), of which, 0.5 square miles (1.3 km²) of it is land and 2.13% is water.

Demographics

As of the census^[1] of 2000, there were 616 people, 232 households, and 174 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,338.2 people per square mile (517.0/km²). There were 265 housing units at an average density of 575.7 per square mile (222.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 93.34% White, 5.84% Native American, and 0.81% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.14% of the population.

There were 232 households out of which 40.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.4% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.6% were non-families. 20.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.02.

In the city the population was spread out with 31.3% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 97.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $32,750, and the median income for a family was $36,111. Males had a median income of $25,096 versus $21,442 for females.
