London Buses route 464 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, United Kingdom. The service is currently contracted to Metrobus.

History

Route 464 was planned as a Tramlink feeder service, though it started well before Tramlink itself. The service connects Biggin Hill and New Addington for onward tram connections to Croydon. The route replaced partially Metrobus’ own commercial route 356, which ran from Tatsfield and Biggin Hill directly into Croydon. The route number of the 464 reflects that the original connections were made by using route 64.

The section between Tatsfield and Biggin Hill is now the main bus route to Tatsfield. Although Tatsfield is also served from the south (to Oxted and Warlingham ) by Surrey County Council contracted route 411, this is a much less frequent service than route 464’s half hourly daily service. To get between New Addington and Biggin Hill, buses run across Biggin Hill Valley along some very narrow roads, such as Salt Box Hill (pictured above). The buses then follow the old 356 route to Tatsfield. As a result of the narrow roads, the timetable is set up so buses meet as far away at those sections as possible.

A direct service between Biggin Hill and New Addington is not a new idea. In the 1960s, the Orpington Rural Transport Association started a midibus route to connect Biggin Hill and Orpington. It was planned to extend the route from Biggin Hill to have three different “branches” to both Tatsfield and New Addington. In the end, only the New Addington route ever the development, but it didn’t last long. Incidentally, although planned as a Tramlink connector route, it now isn’t at all, it having retained the 464 route number and not offering through fares that are available on the T-prefixed T31, T32, and T33 services.
