Turbotville is a borough in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 691 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Turbotville is located at coor dms|41|6|9|N|76|46|16|W|city (41.102454, -76.771188)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.4 square mile (1.2km²), all land.

The Borough is located in the Upper Susquehanna Valley in the north-central part of Pennsylvania.

History

The borough was incorporated in April 1859, though it had been laid out several years earlier. The original name was Snydertown, but the name was later changed for Turbot Township (originally Turbutt). The borough now lies completely inside Lewis Township. The first settlement was made by Philip Reifsnyder, a blacksmith, who built a house near the corner of Main and Paradise streets.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 691 people, 278 households, and 190 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,546.9 people per square mile (592.9/km²). There were 302 housing units at an average density of 676.1/sq mi (259.1/km²). The racial makeup of the borough was 99.13% White, 0.14% African American, 0.14% Native American, and 0.58% from two or more races.

There were 278 households out of which 37.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 9.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.3% were non-families. 27.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 3.03.

In the borough the population was spread out with 28.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 31.5% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 11.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 91.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.7 males.

The median income for a household in the borough was $40,221, and the median income for a family was $43,750. Males had a median income of $35,875 versus $25,583 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $18,401. About 4.5% of families and 3.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1.6% of those under age 18 and 13.5% of those age 65 or over.

Recreation

The Turbotville Community Park is located on both Church and Pine Streets. The park includes a picnic pavilion, baseball field, tennis courts, and playground area. The newly renovated Turbotville Community Hall is also located at the park.

Education

The borough is part of the Warrior Run School District, which encompasses the Watsontown area as well. The Turbotville Elementary School is located in the borough, and the Middle School/High School complex is located just outside of town.

Yearly Events

The Turbotville Borough hosts several events throughout the year. The annual Firemen's Carnival, held the first week week in June, has a variety of foods, games, and musical acts. Throughout the week a Pet Parade is held along with other activities. The biggest event is the Firemen's Parade that travels throughout the towns Main Street. The VFW in Turbotville also holds a Memorial Day Parade in honor of all the military veterans from the area. In August, the Lions Club "Augustfest" takes place, with food, crafts and community yard sales. A community Halloween Party and children's Christmas show with Santa Claus also occur.

Churches

The Turbotville area is served by three churches. Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, and St. James Lutheran Church all serve the Turbotville area.
