Austrian legislative election, 1949

Austrian legislative election, 1949

The elections to the Austrian National Council of 1949 were the first elections after World War II when former Nazis were allowed to vote. A newly created party, the Federation of Independents (VdU) (a predecessor of the Freedom Party of Austria) specifically targeted this group of voters and immediately took away a large number of votes from the ÖVP and SPÖ. The ÖVP and SPÖ continued their coalition.
