The constituency covers the areas of Erith and Thamesmead near the border of South East London. It was created for the 1997 general election from parts of the old Woolwich and Erith & Crayford constituencies.

*Abbey Wood, Plumstead and Thamesmead Moorings from the London Borough of Greenwich.
