- 1852 Democratic National Convention
The 1852 Democratic National Convention was held at
Maryland Institutein Baltimore, Maryland. This convention is notable for the hostility between groups of the party, divided over the Compromise of 1850. The convention was called to order by Democratic National Committeechairman Benjamin F. Hallett. Romulus M. Saundersserved as the temporary convention chairman and John W. Davis served as the permanent convention president. Franklin Pierce, a dark horsecandidate, beat out more notable members of the party such as Lewis Cassof Michigan, future president James Buchanan, and Stephen A. Douglas. Franklin Piercefinally made it to election for presidency on the 49th ballot as a dark horse candidate. William R. Kingwas chosen as the vice presidential candidate.
