Glazov

Glazov ( _ru. Гла́зов, IPA2|'gɫazɘf; Udmurt: Глазкар) is a city located in the north of the Republic of Udmurtia, Russia. It is located along the Trans-Siberian Railway, at coord|58|8|N|52|40|E|region:RU_type:city(100,894). Population: 100,894 (2002 Census).

The town was founded in the 16th century as a village; town status was granted to it in 1780. Olga Knipper, wife of the famous Russian writer Anton Chekhov, was born in Glazov. During the Russian Civil War the town was of considerable military importance. It was taken by Kolchak's general Anatoly Pepelyayev on 2 June, 1919.

There are five establishments of higher education in the city, notably Glazov State Pedagogical Institute named after Vladimir Korolenko and the Glazov branch of Izhevsk State Technical University.

It is known for "Chepetsk Mechanical Works", Russian main producer of uranium, zirconium, and calcium metals for nuclear power stations, military, and space technologies. Apart from machine-building, there are wood-working, clothing and food industries.
