Boundaries

The constituency comprises the electoral divisions of Alway, Beechwood, Langstone, Liswerry, Llanwern, Ringland, St. Julians and Victoria in the city of Newport, plus the electoral divisions of Caldicot Castle, Dewstow, Green Lane, Mill, Rogiet, Severn, The Elms and West End from the principal area of Monmouthshire. The western boundary is formed by the River Usk, the northern boundary by the city boundary, the southern boundary by the Bristol Channel and the eastern boundary by the end of the built-up area of Caldicot.

History

Newport East was created when the former Newport borough constituency was split into two divisions in 1983. It also included some rural areas formerly part of Monmouth county constituency. There have been only minor boundary changes since the constituency was created.
