Hulbert is a town in Cherokee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 543 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Hulbert is located at coor dms|35|55|54|N|95|8|34|W|city (35.931562, -95.142642)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.5 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 543 people, 214 households, and 148 families residing in the town. The population density was 572.1 people per square mile (220.7/km²). There were 245 housing units at an average density of 258.1/sq mi (99.6/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 44.94% White, 47.15% Native American, and 7.92% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.18% of the population.

There were 214 households out of which 36.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.1% were married couples living together, 20.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.4% were non-families. 26.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.01.

In the town the population was spread out with 29.8% under the age of 18, 12.3% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 19.5% from 45 to 64, and 11.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 29 years. For every 100 females there were 82.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $19,886, and the median income for a family was $24,063. Males had a median income of $23,333 versus $19,107 for females. The per capita income for the town was $9,508. About 23.7% of families and 26.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.7% of those under age 18 and 34.4% of those age 65 or over.

Best known for its reputation of being a speed trap, Hulbert also boasts being the headquarters for more than one thriving business.

NeoHealth -- Northeastern Oklahoma Community Health Centers, Inc. is a Community Health Center that has 4 clinics: Hulbert Health Center in Hulbert, Tahlequah Health Center, NeoHealth OB/GYN Associates, and NeoHealth Pediatrics, all three located in Tahlequah.

Lake Region Electric Cooperative -- LREC provide electricity to most of Cherokee and surrounding counties.
