"Damaged" is a dance-pop song by American R&B group Danity Kane. It was written by Justin Walker, Sean Combs, Mario Winans, Jonathan Yip, Jeremy Reeves, Micayle McKinney, Ray Romulos, Shannon "Slam" Lawrence, Rose Marie Tan, and James Smith.[1] The song was produced by the Stereotypes, with additional production from Combs and Winans,[1] for the band's second studio album, Welcome to the Dollhouse.

Released as the album's lead single on January 29, 2008 stateside, the song reached number 10 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, where it became the band's second non-consecutive top 10 entry and hit double-platinum status. "Damaged" also peaked at #5 on the US Pop 100 Charts, due to over 5.02 million digital download sales (according to Nielsen Soundscan). The song spent 3 weeks at the top of the Hot Dance Club Play charts. In addition, "Damaged" reached the top 30 on the Canadian Hot 100, also entering the Irish Singles Chart and "Bubbling Under Hot 100 Hip-Hop/R&B Tracks" chart.

Release and promotion

In January 2008, Danity Kane posted a bulletin on their official MySpace page expressing that they were giving their fans a chance to vote for one of two new songs that they thought were appropriate to become the lead single, with "Damaged" and "Pretty Boy" being the two choices for online voters to choose from. However, "Damaged" overshadowed the competition, consequently becoming Danity Kane's first single from the group's second album. On January 28, 2008, group members Aubrey O'Day and Dawn Angeliqué Richard posted bulletins on their respective MySpace sites stating that "Damaged" was indeed the first single from their most recent album. Danity Kane eventually performed "Damaged" for the very first time at Spotlight on Bad Boy R&B Night.[4]

The production of the song is featured on the seventh episode of the second season of MTV's Making the Band series. For promotion, the band performed "Damaged" on television shows such as The Tyra Banks Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet, Nashville Star, and MTV's Total Request Live.

The song has been used on the TV shows, The 2008 VMA's Pre-Show, America's Best Dance Crew (twice), So You Think You Can Dance and MTV's Top Pop Group.

By April 1, 2009 the song still sat on Itunes top 100 downloads at position #90. Thus making it 16 full months on the Top 100 Downloads of Itunes music library. The song has peaked at position #1 and hadn't left the charts since its appearance on January 28, 2008.

"Damaged" ranked #1 on New York-based radio station Z100's Top 100 Songs of 2008.

"Damaged" was ranked #1 on iTunes top Pop songs of 2008, the song also ranked #1 on iTunes list of overall top songs of 2008.

Music video

The music video for "Damaged" was directed by Syndrome and premiered on March 11, 2008 on MTV's TRL, where it peaked at number 3 on its countdown. In its entirety it premiered on MTV.com.[5] The video also premiered as the 'New Joint' on BET's 106 & Park on March 20, 2008. The song peaked at #6.

The video features the members of Danity Kane in a futuristic theme. The pink special effects are used to represent the setting of being within an actual heart. Throughout the video, choreography is done along with the music and the girls are shown in a futuristic room with screens of them performing the choreography, which they see while laying down on a futuristic bed. Towards the end of the music video, the beds that the girls are lying on close to form a heart, which happens to be the heart of a man on a stretcher in a hospital. Medical staff, who turn out to be the members of Danity Kane, try to revive him. The music video then transitions to a setting where the man is in his bedroom with a note on him saying "Tired of the damage - DK".

For the DJ Crime Remix, a video was released on Danity Kane's official Youtube-channel.[6]

  • The video was nominated for Best Pop Video and Best Dancing in a Video at the MTV Video Music Awards 2008.
  • The song was nominated for a Teen Choice Award for Best R&B Track.[citation needed]
  • "Damaged" was ranked #2 on MTV's 25 most-viewed music videos of 2008 only to be beaten by the Britney Spears song "Womanizer"
  • "Damaged" also ranked #9 on MTV's Top 25 songs of 2008.
  • "Damaged" was also ranked #5 on MTV's Top 25 Videos of 2008.[7]

The song was released to legal digital download sites on January 29, 2008 in the United States.[8] In the UK, despite their album being giving an advertising campaign in the UK iTunes store, the song failed to chart on the top 100 songs or the top 100 pop songs. However, it has debuted on the Canadian Hot 100 at number seventy-two and has so far peaked at number twenty-six.

In Australia, despite a total lack of promotion, the song continues to steadily climb the iTunes top 100 songs charts, and has peaked at 25. The physical CD single was released on August 23, and subsequently Damaged debuted on the official Australian ARIA Urban charts at number 12.
