WCFR is an
AM Radiostation licensed to Springfield, Vermont. It broadcasts a classic hitsformat with 5,000 watts during the day. The station carries local high school sports and Boston Red Soxbaseball from the Red Sox Radio Network.
WCFR was known as WNBX from 1999 to 2006.WCFR was started in 1954 as WNIX. It was purchased by Vermont Broadcasting legend Carlos Zezza in the 1950's. WCFR is named for the first initials of Zezza's three children. It enjoyed many years as a successful music station. Zezza sold WCFR to Sconnix in 1974 and they changed the format from Top-40 to Adult Contemporary. Zezza's son Frank led a group that purchased the station back from Sconnix in the early 80's. By the 1980's, WCFR's popularity waned in favor of its sister station at the time, WCFR-FM. The 1990's saw several changes in ownership and WCFR carried various formats through the decade. In 1998, WCFR-AM changed from
adult standardsto a business news format [http://www.bostonradio.org/nerw/nerw-980904.html] . The station was silent for a time after station operator Brian Dodge, who changed the callsign to WNBX, was charged with domestic assault[http://www.bostonradio.org/nerw/nerw-001128.html] , the station was carrying programming from sister station WWNHin Madbury, New Hampshireat the time. Current owner, Bob Vinikoor bought the station in 2001 and switched it to a simulcast of established FM talk station WNTK-FM. The format was switched to oldiesin 2003 and the WCFR call letters returned in 2006. WCFR finally switched to the current classic hits format in 2007 when Ray Kimball took over the job of running the station. Former sister station WCFR-FM, later WEEYon 93.5 was sold separately from the AM WCFR in 1998 and was moved to Swanzey, NH in 2007. WPLY-FMwas known as WCFR until owner Nassau Broadcastingsold off a group of stations in Pennsylvania and parked the WPLY call letters on 96.3 in Walpole, New Hampshire.
