Fawcett was born as William Fawcett Thompson in High Forest in Olmsted County near Rochester in southeastern
Minnesota . The name "Fawcett" came from thephysician who delivered him. His father, William Eaton Lawrence Thompson, was aMethodist pastor who encourage young Bill to enter the ministry. OnSeptember 5 ,1916 , three days before his twenty-second birthday, Fawcett was licensed to preach by the Hamline Quarterly Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Minnesota. After his military service, he went into acting, instead of the ministry, first inCanada and then in theUnited States . He had performed in churchdrama s and acted so convincingly that his mother would sometimes cry over his characterizations. August 18 ,1925 , Fawcett married the former Helene Krag in Minnetonka, asuburb of Minneapolis in Hennepin County. The union lasted until his death. The couple was childless. Fawcett died ofcardiovascular disease at the age of seventy-nine inSherman Oaks, California .
