Alex Tudor-Hart

Dr. Alex Tudor Hart, MD BSc, a member of a well-known British artistic and radical family, was a student of John Maynard Keynes at Cambridge and then, later, of Melanie Kleine.

A Communist, he worked as a GP in the Rhondda Valley in Wales and served in a field operating theatre in the Spanish civil war [cite book |url=http://books.google.com/books?id=a49uplMY6CYC|title=The British Women and the Spanish Civil War|date=2002|isbn=0415277973|author=Angela Jackson] [cite article |title=Obituary: Alex Tudor Hart|date=1992-10|journal=Socialism and Health|author=Julian Tudor Hart] . Methods of dealing with fractures and associated wounds after surgery developed by Tudor-Hart when he worked in Spain continued to save lives in the Second World war.

He and his wife, the Austrian Jewish photographer, Edith Suschitzky, fled to England in 1933 so that she could avoid prosecution for Communist activities in Austria [cite book |url=http://books.google.com/books?id=cHlWhjZEwXYC|title=A Time for Spies: Theodore Stephanovich Mally and the Era of the Great Illegals|date=1999|isbn=0826513522|author=William E. Duff] . She is credited with suggesting to the NKVD recruiter, Arnold Deutsch, that the organization recruit Kim Philby as an agent [cite book |title=The Philby Files - The Secret Life of Master Spy Kim Philby|date=1994|isbn=0316102849|author=Genrikh Borovik] .
