Vehicle registration plates of Thailand

Thailand vehicle license plates ( _th. แผ่นป้ายทะเบียนรถ or หมายเลขทะเบียนรถ or simply ทะเบียนรถ) are the license plates attached to most motorized road vehicles in Thailand, which are required by law. Thai license plates display the name of the province where it was registered.

Types

Common types

The current Thai vehicle license plate format, used since April 1, 1997 (2540 B.E.) (Ex. กค 8 ตาก; กค 88 ตาก; กค 888 ตาก; กค 8888 ตาก).

Some two Thai consonant combinations are not used because they are bad words when spelled. For example, "จน" means poor, "ตด" means flatulence, and "ศพ" means corpse.

This format is used by 8 different types of cars or automobiles which show a difference in plate types.

* Most of 4-doors pickups are include in this type.
** Usually a van with more than seven seats
*** 2-doors pickups with extended cab are include in this type.

Auction plates

There are special plates for auction in Thailand. They have black text with graphic design background for its province registered in, in contrast to the white background that typical plates have.

Motorcycles

The current style of Thai motorcycle license plate have three lines. The first line has three Thai consonants, the second line has small Thai province name where it was registered, and the third line has 1 to 3 numbers (any from 1 to 999).

Some Thai consonant combinations are not used because they are bad words when spelled.

Trucks and Buses

The current style of Thai bus/truck (most songthaews are include) license plate have two numbers, hyphen, four numbers (0001-9999) and a small Thai province name at bottom.

Military and Police

Military and Police plates also exist. Police plates are in dark red background, with white logo and five digits numbers.

Embassy and Consulate

Embassy and consulate vehicles have their own licence plate with blue background and white texts.

Royal vehicles

The Royal Family's or Royal household license plate. 3 white letters in Thai script (ร.ย.ล. which stands for รถยนต์หลวง or royal car) and 1-4 white numbers in Thai script on a black plate.

Location prefixes

Thai license plates are use Thai name of province or district which its owner (a person or company) is located or registered.

[1] Note"Betong" in Yala Province is the only district in Thailand where one can register license plates which display "เบตง" on the vehicle registration plates.
