Upton (also known as Upton-by-Chester) is a civil parish and a large suburb on the outskirts of Chester, Cheshire, England.

It has four primary schools - Upton Heath (formerly "Upton Manor"), Westlea, Acresfield and Mill View - and a secondary school, Upton High. There is also a library which is set next to playing fields, bowling greens and a children's park.

The nearest railway station is the Merseyrail station at Bache.

There are several rows of shops, and at least three pubs. Upton also plays host to a golf course and four churches; one Baptist, one United Reformed Church, one catholic (St Columba's), one Church of England, called Holy Ascension.

History

Formerly a township in Broxton Hundred, it included the hamlet of Upton Heath. The population was 173 in 1801, 555 in 1851, 1,769 in 1901 and 6,343 in 1951. Politics

City Council

Upton consists mainly of two City Council wards, Upton Grange and Upton Westlea.

Upton Grange

County Council

British Parliament

Upton is in the City of Chester parliamentary constituency and is represented by Christine Russell, who has held the seat since 1997.

2007 Election

The Conservatives' Hilarie McNae secured 56% of the vote as the Conservatives took control of the city council from no overall control - attaining a majority of six.

There were no elections in Upton Westlea and the current councillors will all retain their seats until 2009 when the council is replaced by the West Cheshire and Cheshire unitary authority. This means that Pat Lott will serve an additional year as she would have been up for re-election in 2008.

2006

In Upton Grange, David Evans, formerly the Liberal Democrat leader of Chester City Council resigned as leader in March 2006, and did not seek re-election in May. In his place, Michael Main stood, but he was soundly beaten by Jill Houlbrook (Conservative).

Cllr Caroline Mosley was easily re-elected to represent Upton Westlea.
