Shahu II

Shahu II (7 January 1948-) is the present and titular Maharaja of Kolhapur.

Early life

Shahu II was born on 7 January 1948 at Nagpur as Shrimant Dilipsinhrao Rajaramsinhrao Bhonsle to Meherban Shrimant Rajaramsinhrao Bhonsle of Nagpur (d 1970) and to Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Maharajkumari Shalinraje Sahib Maharaj Bhonsle (3 July 1929-) the eldest daughter of Sir Shahoji II, Maharaja of Kolhapur, who was himself only 38 when his grandson was born. Dilipsinhrao received an education at Bishop Cotton High School in Bangalore and from Christian College at Indore, where he took a Bachelor of Arts degree. uccession

As Sir Shahoji had only had one son, Krishnajirao III and there being no other suitable successors, in 1962 he adopted Dilipsinhrao, his grandson, as his son and heir apparent. Dilipsinhrao thereby took the name of Yuvraj Shrimant Shahu Bhonsle Chhatrapati Bahadur on 28 June 1962. On the death of Sir Shahoji on 9 May 1983, Shahu became Maharaja. Family

Shahu II married Her Highness Maharani Yagyaseniraje on 9 March 1970, the couple have two sons:

1. Shrimant Yuvraj Sambhajiraje Shahu Chhatrapati Maharaj Bhonsle, the Heir Apparent (11 February 1971-), married Yuvrani Sanyuktaraje Sahib Maharaj, maternal granddaughter of Pratap Singh Gaekwar of Vadodara. He has one son:

* Shrimant Balkumar Shahajiraje Maharaj Bhonsle

2.Shrimant Maharajkumar Malojiraje Shahu Chhatrapati Maharaj Bhonsle (1975-), m. 11 December 1999, Shrimati Dhawalshriraje Sahib Maharaj, nee' Miss Madhurimar Khanvilkar. He has a son and a daughter:

*Shrimant Yashraje Malojiraje Maharaj Bhonsle (2005-)

*Shrimati Yashashwini Raje Bhonsle (2001-)
