Holar (people)

The Holar are a small community or caste found in Maharashtra state in India, they earn their livelihood from Sheep or Goat rearing. During the summer and winter seasons they migrate to other areas (the migration is known here as Bhatkanti). In the rainy season they return to their villages and stay in a group called Wada, or Shevani.

History

The Holar in the ancient era of Rajas and Maharajas had the business of Playing Dhol, Tutari, Pipani Sanai and Chaughada for the Raja or in the Maharaja's Darbar.

Mirdha is word used for the elder person of a Holar Family who looks after his family and their needs. The Mirdha is well respected within the caste.
